Oh, the wise words of Fleetwood Mac. Who better to represent this spring’s latest fashion trend than Stevie Nicks? Loose skirts, knee high boots, feathers, yep! It’s the 70s again! The New York Fashion Week designers introduced an influx of vintage, 70s inspired prints for their Spring 2011 collections. Yes—that means, high-waisted denim, peasant tops, chunky heels, fringe, disco…Soul Train. Okay, maybe not the disco or Soul Train, but definitely the former. You might be thinking, “Wow—how much more unflattering can flared jeans and baggy shirts be?” That was my initial thought as well. However, I decided to be brave and follow suit of those who lived during, arguably, one of the best eras in United States history. Plus, can’t we get over the legging phase already? It’s about time we get a little foxy and try something different! Here is Derek Lam’s take on 70s-inspired fashion at his Spring 2011 runway show:

On a personal note, I’m really psyched about this trend. All too often are mainstream styles safe and predictable. For once, it’s nice to see some diversity hit the fashion market. Of course, these styles are not for everyone. I admit that the concept may be a little far-out in a world that thrives on tight, form-fitting clothing. However, I encourage you to take the risk and try! I guarantee you’ll look dy-no-mite!

I really love reading your blog! It's interesting to hear your perspective on the current 70s trend. I think including examples of the designers' work adds a lot! And the tip of searching for these styles at Urban Outfitters and Free People is really helpful!

ReplyDeleteCool! I definitely agree that the 70's (and maybe a little 60's) is coming back into the fashion scene especially with the increase of flower prints I feel like I see everywhere.
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm not ready for the shaggy rugs or flaring denim again (I'll stick with my skinnies), I am ready for this legging fashion trend to move on. I feel like I'll replace those flaring denims with a low cut non-denim (maybe just cotton) loose pants. These pants have been on my list for a while and I'm relieved to hear that they're coming into style.
