You Can Call It Another Lonely Day

Oh, the wise words of Fleetwood Mac. Who better to represent this spring’s latest fashion trend than Stevie Nicks? Loose skirts, knee high boots, feathers, yep! It’s the 70s again! The New York Fashion Week designers introduced an influx of vintage, 70s inspired prints for their Spring 2011 collections. Yes—that means, high-waisted denim, peasant tops, chunky heels, fringe, disco…Soul Train. Okay, maybe not the disco or Soul Train, but definitely the former. You might be thinking, “Wow—how much more unflattering can flared jeans and baggy shirts be?” That was my initial thought as well. However, I decided to be brave and follow suit of those who lived during, arguably, one of the best eras in United States history. Plus, can’t we get over the legging phase already? It’s about time we get a little foxy and try something different! Here is Derek Lam’s take on 70s-inspired fashion at his Spring 2011 runway show:

Can you dig it? Here’s Rodarte’s take on mixing vintage patterns. (Side note, Rodarte designed the costumes featured in the film Black Swan. Groovy, I know).

Finally, Elie Tahari took the plunge and dressed his model in head-to-toe denim.

If you don’t want to splurge for these items and just want to follow the runway’s inspiration, local stores like Urban Outfitters or Free People are carrying tons of 70s styles right now.
On a personal note, I’m really psyched about this trend. All too often are mainstream styles safe and predictable. For once, it’s nice to see some diversity hit the fashion market. Of course, these styles are not for everyone. I admit that the concept may be a little far-out in a world that thrives on tight, form-fitting clothing. However, I encourage you to take the risk and try! I guarantee you’ll look dy-no-mite!

Followers—stay dazed. And confused, if you wish.

P.S. I hope you thought my 70s lingo was totally radical, man.

                                            I tried.

For Those With No Interest in Fashion...

A large part of my current identity includes being a student and striving for success upon my intended career path. As I utilize my education by taking prescribed major courses and obeying my academic plans, I am noticing that opportunities for creativity are starting to diminish. After playing the piano for fourteen years, I quit upon coming to college. In addition, the abundance of English courses I experienced in high school that allowed me to channel creativity through writing vanished due to academic plans. However, the loss of these two creative outputs allowed room for my interest in fashion to grow. These days, my creative output is largely expressed through my style. For me, fashion is an expression of identity. It defines who I am or who I want to be. In addition, the evolution of fashion styles is quite remarkable to say the least. Both mainstream and independent trends are constantly reoccurring through the succession of each era. Thus, history comes alive!
As predicted, this blog will describe my reports and opinions on current fashion styles and trends. I decided to make my first blog entry an introduction in hopes to gain fellow interest in a subject that many people may consider unimportant. If you still think this is so, I encourage you to follow my entries onto this blog. Upon further consideration, I guarantee you will see that fashion can be an enlightening, dynamic, and cultural form of art!
